Making the Book

Any publication travels a long and winding road from its inception to its final version, and each stage of the journey involves distinct and critical skills and processes. In this presentation, Ben Railton will discuss a few particularly significant stages in the journey that resulted in the recent publication of his first book, Contesting the Past, Reconstructing the Nation: American Literature and Culture in the Gilded Age, 1876-1893. Using one small section of the finished book as his focus, he will discuss the first research and writings steps; will touch on the processes of dissertation, manuscript, and final book revision; and will conclude by reading the section as it appears in the published text. There should also be time for discussion of how these stages and skills can be connected to any and all scholarly work, including your own!

Journey Across Boundaries
