Graduate Assistant Program
Current and entering graduate students are eligible for Graduate Assistantships. Students must secure a position prior to applying for approval from the Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education. These positions waive tuition for eighteen hours of graduate course work and provide a stipend. There are a limited number of Assistantships available and they are awarded on a competitive basis.
Graduate Assistantships Currently Available for 2010/2011:
Positions will be posted in late August 2010.
Once a position with a department has been secured, a complete application including the following documents must be submitted to the Graduate and Continuing Education Office for the Dean's review:
- Completed Application for Graduate Assistantship (PDF)
- Current Resume
- Two letters of recommendation in reference to candidate's work history (letters from prior employers)
- Unofficial transcript (available on Web4 or through Sheila Lynch in the Office of the Registrar)
Qualifications
Newly accepted graduate students seeking appointments to Graduate Assistant positions must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better and submit two letters of recommendation. One letter should address the academic potential of the student and may be from the undergraduate advisor, a school principal, or a professional agency. These letters of recommendation are to be submitted directly to the graduate office. Current Graduate students must have a graduate GPA of 3.5 or better and two letters of recommendation attesting to their work history.
Stipend and Award
- Graduate Assistants are paid $5,500.00 for the academic year beginning September 1, 2008 and ending June 26, 2009 providing for a biweekly stipend of $250.00.
- Graduate Assistants must work 20 hours per week for 43 weeks in order to earn the full stipend.
- The appointment and award include a tuition waiver for 18 semester hours of graduate work to be completed within the academic year of the appointment. Tuition waivers cannot be carried over to subsequent years.
- Tuition waivers do not apply to Undergraduate Courses, Independent Studies, Directed Studies, Internships, Practica, Continuation of Thesis, Field Work, or other special scheduling courses.
- Graduate Assistants must pay all fees.
Exceptions may be made regarding length of appointments, if so, awards will be prorated. Graduate Assistants are not entitled to any fringe benefits including vacation, sick leave or unemployment compensation, at the end of their contract.
Load and Academic Requirements to Maintain Assistantship
- Graduate Assistants must carry a load of six semester hours of graduate work per semester (Fall & Spring) in their program, which is considered full time. Under load or over load must be petitioned (Student Petition Form (PDF)) to the Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education.
- Graduate Assistants must maintain a GPA of 3.5 in their academic work.
- Graduate Assistants are required to work 20 hours per week, which is considered a full-time work schedule (during official school breaks students must petition (Student Petition Form (PDF)) to request permission for extended hours)
- Graduate Assistants are not allowed to secure a second position on campus.
